To win something back from the lessons I missed, and to give the institute an idea what class would suit me best, I had my first Individual lesson for Analogue Recording and Mixing. I have been in a few professional studio’s in the past, but what I saw at Wisseloord really impressive. I will submit a separate post to tell you more about the Wisseloord Studio.
The lesson took 4 hours, and the teacher explained on a white board some general knowledge on some very basic but fundamental aspects or recording.
Areas we touched:
Definitions and types of sound;
The difference between Analogue and Digital;
The frequency range of the Human ear;
The specifics of MIDI;
The signal flow in a recording;
The different types of microphones and how to make the correct choice for a recording.
He showed ProTools software. It is the DAW software used in the Studio, and what visually attracted me was that you can really choose a view that looks like a mixing console. I see that as an advantage because you can get at home (behind your laptop) acquainted with the layout of a mixer. ProTools is a product from the brand AVID. I know AVID because they are also the provider of Sibelius, which I use for arranging and composing music. The output of Sibelius is a printed score and sheet-music, but you can export the music you wrote as midi file. So it could be an idea to use ProTools as well. Something to discuss in my next lesson.
